When we had to make a decision to place our Step-Father-in-law in a Memory Care Facility we felt we did our homework. To be honest, there were a lot more places that seemed more updated, with a Country Club atmosphere. We had considered putting him there, but was not sure that was in the budget for us. We looked at many. One thing I had observed was that no matter the cost of the facility, observe the staff. Do they look happy? Do they look miserable? When you approach the facility does it look sterile or "homey"? One facility that we visited was actually a place that he had to go to rehabilitation. The building was a nice brick building, but as we approached it looked too sterile; no flowers. The courtyard had all of the chairs bunched up and turned upside down. Whose gonna sit in those seats? The place looked more like a nursing home rather than an assisted living/memory care facility. The residents sat in the hallway in their wheelchair looking lonely. Not much staff/resident interaction. The staff looked miserable and did not smile. Ugh. I certainly wouldn't want him in THAT place.
Then we came back to Taylor home the second time. It was not a sterile environment in the sense of being dull. There was life there. Benches to feed the ducks, When we walked in everyone was so friendly. I noticed the staff talking with the residents and those in Assisted living were doing bingo, another time exercise, another time Bible studying. This is where he needed to be. One of the residents was so sweet to allow us to walk in and see her unit. We left feeling he was in good care.
