Additional Information

MUSC SEASONS is changing what’s possible through, evidence-based care for many psychiatric illnesses, including depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders. The program provides treatment, education and coping skills that help patients manage their symptoms and improve their level of functioning. Care is coordinated with your current provider and offers an alternative to hospitalization.

What to expect from a Group Psychotherapy Program

The first step is the initial assessment. On day one, you will meet with a nurse and a psychiatrist for several hours to go over your medical and mental health history and to review your medications. The program staff will then provide you with an orientation to the program.

MUSC SEASONS is a group therapy program. You will participate in several groups each day. You will also have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a therapist and a psychiatrist. The program begins at 9:00 in the morning and ends at 1:30 in the afternoon. A box lunch is served.

Is MUSC SEASONS right for you?

There are many benefits of participating in an intensive outpatient program. You’ll have a safety and support network that can help decrease the need to be in the hospital. Patients often find a stay in the hospital uncomfortable and less desirable than staying in their own home and own bed at night. As long as your needs can be met safely at home, you can have the best of both worlds: the comforts of home in the evening hours, and receiving therapy and intensive treatment during the daytime.

The MUSC SEASONS treatment team will be working hard to help you meet your goals. Achieving an optimal outcome requires a serious commitment from the patient, as well! The key to success is a willingness to participate in intensive psychotherapy groups and take an active role in your recovery. Patients who are actively psychotic, who have a serious drug or alcohol problem, or who have cognitive impairment (dementia) will not benefit from this type of program. Patients must also be able to manage walking, eating and other activities on their own, or have an assistant.

Why you can trust treatment at MUSC

The National Network of Depression Centers has designated the MUSC Institute of Psychiatry (IOP) as one of only 21 centers of excellence. The National Alliance on Mental Health SC named the IOP the Hospital of the Year four out of the the ast five times it was awarded.  The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina currently ranks seventh in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, and is home to a number of nationally recognized clinicians, researchers and programs.
