What is Dialysis or Renal Replacement Therapy?

Approximately 1,500 liters of blood travel through our kidneys daily, essentially cleaning out unneeded water, minerals, and waste from the body.  This process acts like the body's filtering system, and is vital to our health.  Sometimes, however, our kidneys fail to work properly and can lead to a buildup of unwanted waste - which can lead to a coma, and even death.   Dialysis, or renal replacement therapy, acts as an artificial removal process of waste , water, and minerals. There are two primary types of dialysis: Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis.
