Florence offers a plethora of entertainment and outdoors activities for people of all ages. The Alabama Music Hall of Fame, Florence Indian Mound and Museum, and Ivy Green (Helen Keller’s birthplace) are great cultural and historical sites to spend the afternoon with the grandchildren. It’s important that aging adult stay physically active to ensure good cardiovascular health and prolonged life. Canyon Creek Nature Preserve and Shoal Creek Preserve are only a 45-minute drive from the heart of the metro area. Both are great places for a hike or bike ride. There are also great water sports along the Tennessee River, Wilson Lake, and Wheeler Reservoir. The Shoals is also known for fantastic live music at over 20 bars and saloons throughout the metro area, and also is home to the annual W.C. Handy Music Festival in the summer in honor of W.C. Handy - known as the “Father of Blues” and is from Florence.
